Recent issues in Europe, such as the Greece’s debt crisis, refugee crisis and Brexit, are regarded by Hong Kong critics as the rise of populist wave, the right-wing turn, the return of far right extremism and the fall of democracy. On top of that, U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial moves prompt the question whether populism is in fact corroding the democratic system.
This public lecture shall provide a concise description of the populist phenomenon and the main agenda for the rightists and far-right extremists, followed by an analysis of democracy’s value and discussions on the position of political actions to defend democracy.
